How many customers gave each score (1 to 5)?
Before you survey
How many customers do you need to listen to?
You don't need to interview every one of your customers to get a reliable result. Statistics let you listen to just a sample, a smaller, representative group, and still reach conclusions valid for your whole base. The calculator below tells you how many respondents you need. Enter the size of your base, the desired confidence level, the margin of error you accept, and how diverse your customers are.
Your customer base
This is the complete set of people you'd like to hear from, for example, all of your company's active customers. It's the "whole" the survey wants to represent, and the number you enter in the Size of your customer base field.
Margin of error
This is how much the survey result can vary from your base's true reality. A 5% margin, for example, means a measured index could swing five points up or down. The smaller the margin you accept, the more respondents you'll need.
Confidence level
Indicates the chance you'd get the same result if you surveyed another group from the same base. A 95% level, the market standard, means that in 95 out of 100 surveys you'd find a result within the defined margin of error. The higher the confidence, the more solid your reading.
Diversity of your base
This is how similar your customers are to each other on points that matter: profile, habits, age, region. Very different (heterogeneous) bases require hearing from more people to represent everyone; more similar (homogeneous) bases call for a smaller sample. It's the choice you make in the Diversity of your base field.
Sample
This is the group of customers you'll actually listen to in order to represent the whole base. Chosen carefully, it lets you reach conclusions valid for all your customers without interviewing every single one. It's exactly the number the calculator will show you.
